Shirit Lee Weiss
Shirit Lee Weiss, director, was born in Israel and over the past decade has been one of the leading opera directors in the country. She works with all of Israel's prominent orchestras and directs operas and musicals on a regular basis. At the Israeli Opera she directed Die Entfhurung aus dem Serail (Mozart) - the Acre Festival, Duke’s Blue Beard’s Castle (Bartok), Orlando (Handel), The Medium (Menotti), Mothers ( David Sebba), a staged version of Mozart's Requiem, Hanoch Levin – the opera (Sebba, Keret, Cnaan, Reshef, Ben Nun). The community productions of Cinderella (Rossini) and The Magic Flute (Mozart), the family productions of The Magic Flute (Mozart), The Barber of Seville (Rossini) and What about the deer, a musical fantasy based on the popular Israeli children's songs of all times.
For the Israeli Opera’s Meitar Opera Studio where she serves as Artistic Director she directed many productions including Die Fledermaus (J. Strauss), Don Pasquale (Donizetti), Werther (Massenet), The Telephone and The Medium (Menotti), Cosi fan tutte, Don Giovanni, La clemenza di Tito, La finta giardiniera, The Impresario (Mozart), I Capuletti ed i Montecchi (Bellini), Suor Angelica (Puccini),The Rake's Progress (Stravinsky) and others. She directed Pierrot Lunaire (Schoenberg) as part of the Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival and with the Israeli Chamber Project. With the Israeli Philharmonic she staged Candide (Bernstein). She directed numerous opera productions for the Haifa Symphony Orchestra, the Be'er Sheva Sinfonietta, the Ra'anana Symphonette, the Jerusalem and the Tel Aviv Music Academies, the International Vocal Arts Institute and others. These productions included Die lustige Witve (Lehar), Die Zauberflote (Mozart), Trouble in Tahiti (Bernstein), Il barbiere di Siviglia (Rossini), The Old Maid and the Thief (Menotti), Giulio Sabino (Sarti), Die Fledermaus (J.Strauss), La bohème (Puccini), L'incoronazione di Poppea (Monteverdi) and others. She directed Songs for Amalia at the Tel Aviv Piano Festival. With the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra; La liberazione di Ruggiero (Cachini), La Calisto (Cavalli) and Il primo omicidio (Scarlatti). With the Orpheus ensemble she staged Orpheus (Telemann). with the Moran Choir, Jun Jun, a work by Yossi Banai and Ella Milch-Sheriff, with the Israel Chamber Orchestra and the Bat - Kol Choir she staged the children's opera Little Monster by Adi Cohen and Shira Patchornik. As part of the Israel Music Fest, she directed the original opera "ASD" by Sarit Shley Zondiner and with the Meitar ensemble the new opera Cut Glass by Hana Ajiashvili and Royce Vavrek as part of the Felicja Blumental International Music Festival. At the Original Israeli Musical Festival, she directed both Greta and the Space Race (2014) and Goldie Bras (2015), both of which won the first prize in their respective festivals.
Weiss is the Artistic Director of the Israeli Opera’s young artists program Meitar Opera Studio and works regularly with young singers. She is the Director of the Israeli Opera’s Educational, Community and Opera Projects.
